I am very interested in the upcoming election and how the different parties’ attitudes to business and welfare will affect the vote and the eventual success of the country. I wish to study a course that will provide me with a thorough insight into the political and economic impact of our national decisions.

Medicine combines the practical application of the sciences, the need for lifelong learning and close interaction with people, aptitudes that I have and want to use. The responsibilities of a doctor attract me. I have tried to experience as many aspects of medicine as possible. Shadowing a senior registrar in Oncology seeing post-operative patients at the Royal Free Hospital London and time in the Medical Physics department of East Dulwich Hospital showed me different views of hospital work. Two days with the Paediatric ENT specialist at St Helier Hospital made me realise the difficulties encountered and skills required in dealing with children. Visits to the haemodialysis and cardiology departments during a week’s course for prospective medical students at the Royal Berkshire Hospital particularly interested me. The three months voluntary work I did at the Berkshire Independent Hospital, talking to patients and assisting with administration, started me thinking about how a hospital is run

As medicine is a scientifically based career, that involves interpersonal skills and caring for people, I feel that this is the best career path for me. This decision was finalised at the medlink course in Nottingham University. There I was able to converse with students and doctors. Collectively their personal accounts and lectures gave me the information to confirm my wish to become a doctor. What particularly interests me in medicine, is the aspect of using my knowledge and skills to diagnose different problems, discover the various causes and make the right prognosis for each individual case, on a daily basis

The human body is a very remarkable thing. Astrid Alauda once said "Your body is a temple, but only if you treat it as one". There is no truer fact in life, I appreciate this so much I always do my best to look after myself and I want to be able to do the same for others. Two years ago when I saw a family member lying on the hospital bed with an oxygen mask over her face I felt hopeless and scared. The fragility of the human condition swept over me. I realised at this point, not only the enormous responsibility of medicine, but of the ability of the doctor to play their part and deliver their knowledge with compassion and professionalism. My desire to become a doctor stems largely from this event.
